I have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder. Not an easy thing, especially in light of the stigma associated with mental illness. There has been tremendous discussion about mental health of late in light of the gruesome murders in CT. I have read the opinions of the NRA and especially read with interest the opinions of those who do not struggle with a mental illness. The voices of those who have a mental illness are silenced, largely due to, I am sure, stigma. Well, no more. Unless and until there can be a clear dialogue about people in our communities who need help ARE helped tragedies such as the one in CT can only be expected to continue. And no, that does not make me of the mind that anything 'good' came of this tragedy or that there was a 'reason' for the slaughter of innocents. But more on that later.
I have been waiting for 'someone else' to speak up and out about the mentally ill and their needs. And then tonight, I nominated me. Welcome to my journey, hopefully we can learn something along the way.
